It has passed two years since I had visited Isle of Man.
I had participated in the Cycle race called “CYCLEFEST”, and went back Japan after watching Classic Motorcycle Race which starts before TT-race.

初めてマン島に来たのは今から2年前。
サイクルフェストという自転車レースに参加し、TTレースが始まる前のPre-TTクラッシクレースを観てから帰国しました。




Almost tourists come to the Isle of Man to watch TT- Race, so that it's not too much to say that when it comes to Isle of Man, nothing better than TT-Race.
But I didn’t know anything about Isle of Man even TT-RACE before I had visited there.
I had heard that there are Pre-TT, Post-TT, Southern100, and Manx Gran Prix other than TT-Race, but I never know these differences and positioning.
As I hearing and looking into various things after returning Japan, I knew about the history and background of the race, which is officially called Pre-TT-Classic Road Race.
I can gradually image the race in perspective obscurely.

マン島といえばTTレースといっていいほど、日本人も含めた多くの旅行者はTTレース観戦を目的にマン島へ来るケースがほとんどです。
ですが私の場合、マン島に来る以前はマン島TTレースの事等ほとんど知りませんでした。
帰国後にいろいろと聞いたり調べたりする中で、正式にはPre-TT Classic Road Raceという名前のレースの歴史や背景を知り、その全体像がぼんやりとですがイメージ出来るようになりました。


Pre-TT, Post-TT, and SOUTHERN100 road races which are held in BILLOWN Course, Southern part of Islands, are appealed thoroughly as “The Friendly Race”
The Pre-TT Classic road race makes a great start of Race week that follows TT-race, Post-TT, Southern100 and Manx Gran Prix.

島の南のコース、BILLOWNコースで開催されるPre-TT、Post-TT、SOUTHERN100のロードレースは、Friendly Raceという言葉が前面に打ち出されているレースです。
そしてこのBILLOWNコースで開催されるPre-TTによって、その後に続くTTレース、Post-TT、SOUTHERN100と続くTT-WEEKのスタートを切る事になります。


Actually, Pre-TT is second times for me, but I made a fresh start as one of the Media.
At the same time of freshness, the scenery around the BILLOWN course makes me feel friendly like going back to my home town every year.
Is that because I grow up at countryside or remain me since I had felt very cozy two years ago?
I feel fresh mixed with nostalgia, and higher expectations for beginning of TT-WEEK.

実際は2回目となるPre-TTですが、今回はMediaの一員として参加するため新たな気持ちで挑みました。
新鮮さと同時に、BILLOWNコースや周辺の風景は毎年帰省する田舎のような親しみを感じさせます。
これは私が田舎で育ったからでしょうか。それとも2年前に初めて来た時の居心地の良さを思い出したからでしょうか。
新鮮さと懐かしさが入り混じる中、TT-WEEKの幕開けとなるレースに期待が高まります。


I could take pictures at the official area as I got Media Pass.
When I watched two years ago, I was utterly shocked by sounds, smell and vibration of classic motorcycle and was wrapped with vagueness impression time-slipped to some decade ago.

And this time what I saw at home straight very close to Marshal is a reality that is in front of my eyes, and it’s a sensation filled with excitement of riders and spectators.

I sat down on the road from the start point about 300 meters and was waiting mass start riders as holding a camera and looking into a viewfinder.
The sounds of engine is getting close to me and the impact as if mass of machines jump over my head was more than I expected, then I bend backward.

今回は撮影者の一人としてMedia Passを手に入れたため、運営側しか立ち入れない場所でも観る事が出来ました。
前回はクラシックバイクの音や臭いと振動に、ただただ衝撃を受け、数十年前にタイムスリップしたかのような掴みどころのない感動がありました。

そして今回ホームストレートでマーシャルが居る場所の直ぐ脇で観たものは、正に目の前にある現実で、ライダーとそれを観る観客一人ひとりの熱気に包み込まれる感覚でした。

スタートから直線約300m地点の道路に座り込み、カメラを構えてファインダーを覗き、一斉にスタートするライダー達を待ち構えていると、エンジン音が近づいて来ると共に、数台のマシンが一体となって頭の上を飛び越えていくかのような想像以上のインパクトで身体が後ろにのけ反りました。



I looked off a viewfinder and checked the distance between my siting point and run line of riders. Of course we are allowed shooting only safety zone.

ファインダーから目を離し、自分のいる場所とライダーの走行ラインとの距離を確認してしまったくらいです。
もちろん実際は安全性を保てる距離でしか撮影は許されていないのですが……。


Even though it is a classic motorcycle, its speed feeling seen almost from the front was far beyond my imagination not to ride a motorcycle. No matter how many times the shutter was pushed, that impact never faded away.

クラシックバイクとはいえ、ほぼ正面から観るそのスピード感はオートバイに乗らない私の想像をはるかに超えていて、何度シャッターを切ってもそのインパクトが薄れる事はありませんでした。



On the other hand, I saw the rider who speed down before the ground stand and coursed out without making a lap of 6 km course.
As I knew later, in this race there are few riders course out for the first lap. I think that is also proof how does maintenance go well. Even though like this rider course out understand well
Even so, like this rider who course out did not take more risk than necessary, because he fully understand that doing overdo will be troubled for not only himself but also other riders, I think.

その勢いを見せる一方で、約6kmのコースを1周することもなく、グランドスタンド手前でスピードを落とし、ゆっくりとコースアウトするライダーを見ました。
後でわかった事ですが、このレースは1周目でコースアウトするライダーがほとんどいません。それは、いかに整備が行き届いているか！　という証明でもあると思います。
それなのにコースアウトしていったライダーは、必要以上の危険を冒さない、無理をする事が自分だけではなく、他のライダー達にも迷惑をかけてしまう事態になる事を十分に理解しているからなのだと思います。



Many spectators embark on the stone wall and sent applause to like these riders.
I got a warm feeling to see these spectators who greeted warmly even more to riders who could not finish.
In addition to honoring a good fight, it seems they respect and praise for their judgement of safety first.

そんなライダー達に、石垣から身を乗り出して拍手を送る観客。
フィニッシュラインを切れなかったライダー達を、より一層暖かく迎える観客に暖かい気持ちになりました。
健闘を称えるという意味合いに加え、Safety firstの決断を尊重し称賛する意もあるように感じられます。


I watched few times the race of car or motorcycle in Japan, the most different point is the spectator is not just a spectator but a participant.
There are some physical reasons such as a public road race where residents use daily and the distance between spectator seats and course is close, but also mental distance between riders and spectators is very close.
This is the race that I want you to experience it once even you have no experience to ride a motorcycle and no experience to watch the race.

日本でも車やオートバイのレースを何度か観ましたが、最も異なるポイントは観る者がただの観客ではなく、参加者であるという事です。
日常的に住民が走っている公道のレースであるという事や、観客席とコースの距離感が近いという物理的な理由もあるでしょうが、ライダーと観客の精神的な距離感が近いのです。
今までにオートバイに乗った事がない人も、レースを観た事がない人も、一度は体験してほしい、そう思えるレースです。




In addition, the beauty of machines and the coolness of riders who operate machines.
In my opinion, I never think new racing machines are beautiful because it is rugged and too vivid but it seems classic racing machines show a fusion of coolness and beauty.
The appearance of the riders wear the simple black leather racing suit and helmet, and ride a beautiful form machine with classic color is a graceful figure and I want to watch for a while.

そして、マシンの美しさとマシンを操るライダー達のカッコ良さ。
個人的意見ですが、新しいレーシングマシンはごつくて派手という印象で、美しいと思ったことはないのですが、クラシックレースバイクはカッコ良さと美しさが融合している気がします。
シンプルなブラックレザーのレーシングスーツにヘルメットを被り、クラシックなカラーリングの美しいフォルムのバイクに跨る姿は、優美でしばらく見ていたくなるほどです。


I was surprised two years ago, but there are not a few 70s or 80s age riders in this race.
Once they take off their helmet, I likely to make a good comeback “Is rider also classic?” But he is still cool.
I have never seen like these cool old men.

２年前も驚いたことなのですが、このレースには70代80代のライダーがざらにいます。
ヘルメットを取ると、ライダーもクラシックか!?　と突っ込みを入れたくなるのですが、それでもやっぱりカッコ良いのです。
私はこれまで、こんなにもカッコ良いじーさん達を見た事がありません。


Although Japan is one of the longevity countries, it seems that when late 60s treat as a silver age or old man. But here in Isle of Man, classic rider who is 80s still active rider. They compete equally with young people like 30s or 40s and praise each other. I have seen such a sight many times.
If 70s or 80s who can in practice such a cool life style increase much more in Japan, it also stimulates young people and may be their goal. I think it will change the intergenerational relationship will change.

日本は長寿国であるにも関わらず、60代後半にもなるとシルバー世代や老人といった扱いをされる事が多いように思いますが、ここのクラシックライダーは80歳でも「現役」です。30代40代とも互角に勝負をし、お互いを称え合う、そんな姿を幾度となく目にしました。
日本でもこんな風にカッコ良い生き方やスタイルを実践できる70代や80代が増えてくると、若者にも刺激を与え、目標にもなるのではないかと思います。世代間の関わり方もきっと変わるような気がします。



Of course there are individual differences how to feel, but I'd like to recommend this classic to those who like antiques or classic taste at least.
We can enjoy enough other than the race itself.
For example, you can watch the machines thrusting at the camp site and have a conversation with the owner…
Especially the classic motorcycle owners are strongly motivated to machine and gladly tell us the passion and history of their machine.
Many people recommend trying to ride their machine.
As anyone can go inside the camp site, we can also enjoy before and after the race.

I feel that I understood a little about why it is called “The Friendly Race”.

もちろん感じ方に個人差はあると思いますが、少なくともアンティークやクラシックを好む人には是非来てほしいし、実感して欲しいと思います。
レースそのものだけでなく、レースに備えてキャンプサイトにぞくぞくと集まってくるマシンを眺めたり、オーナーと会話をしてみたり……。
クラシックバイクのオーナーは特別マシンへの思い入れが強く、マシンへの想いや歴史について喜んで語ってくれます。
跨ってみろと勧めてくれる人も少なくありません。キャンプサイトには誰でも入る事ができるので、レース前後も十分に楽しめるのです。

Friendly Raceといわれる所以が少しわかった気がします。
